Short answer: if your website is slow and the host insists “everything is fine on our end,” the problem usually isn’t your site — it’s the server it sits on. Cheap shared hosting is cheap because it’s oversold: the provider sells more CPU, memory and disk speed than the machine actually has, betting that most of the hundreds of sites on it stay idle. When a neighbour wakes up, your site stalls — and the host’s dashboard still shows green, because the server average looks fine. No plugin fixes this. The only fix is not being on an oversold box.

What “overselling” actually means
Overselling means promising more resources than the server can deliver at the same time. A box has a fixed amount of CPU, RAM and disk speed; a cheap host divides it among far more accounts than it could ever serve at once, on the statistical bet that they won’t all be busy together. That’s also the secret behind “unlimited bandwidth” and “unlimited storage” — those only work because most accounts are tiny, dormant, or abandoned. A single shared server routinely carries hundreds of sites; in the cheapest tiers, well over a thousand.
It isn’t necessarily fraud. It’s a calculated trade-off: rock-bottom prices in exchange for the risk that, when several sites get busy at once, everyone slows down.
Why your site stalls: the noisy neighbour
On a shared box, resources usually aren’t hard-capped per site. So when one neighbour gets a traffic spike, runs a heavy export, or catches a wave of bots, it eats the shared CPU and disk — and every other site on the machine slows down with it. You changed nothing; someone you’ll never meet did.
This problem is so common that an entire product exists just to contain it: CloudLinux puts a hard limit around each account so one site can’t starve the others. That a whole industry product had to be invented for this tells you how routine overselling is.
Why the host won’t tell you
Two reasons. First, admitting the box is oversold destroys the cheap-price pitch. Second — and this is the honest part — from their side, the server really does look fine. Their monitoring shows the average load across the whole machine, which stays green even while your single site is stuck behind a neighbour’s spike. So support says “we see no problem on our end,” and from their averaged view, they’re not lying. They’re just not looking at your site specifically.
How to tell if you’re on an oversold box
- Fast at night, slow at peak. If the site is snappy at 2am and crawls at midday, you’re feeling the neighbours wake up.
- Random slow spells with no change on your side. You didn’t touch anything, and it’s slow anyway.
- Time-to-first-byte jumps around. The server’s first response is quick sometimes and several seconds other times — a classic shared-load symptom.
- “Unlimited everything” for a few euros. Unlimited is only possible by overselling. The promise itself is the tell.
- Bot waves hit harder. On an oversold box, a crawl from AI and other bots is enough to tip you over, because there’s no spare headroom to absorb it.
What actually fixes it
Not a caching plugin, and not “upgrading” to a slightly bigger but equally oversold plan. The real fix is structural: a server where the number of sites is known and bounded, with genuine spare capacity, each site isolated in its own process pool, and someone watching per-site performance instead of the whole-server average.
